DescrizioneMeet the tiniest killer in the water. Having this app installed may save a (your) life!
The Irukandji Jellyfish (Carukia barnesi) inhabits waters of Australia, the Pacific Basin and maybe Florida and other warm oceans.
This is a deadly box jellyfish, which is only 2.5 centimeters (with bell and tentacles) in diameter, which makes it difficult to spot.
The Irukandji is believed to be the most venomous creature in the world. Not much is known about it yet and new discoveries are made all the time.
Getting stung will result in the Irukandji syndrome, a potentially deadly and catastrophic complex of clinical signs and symptoms that has been
attributed to the stings of various species of jellyfish.
The syndrome has also been described throughout the Pacific basin and recently from waters off Florida.
In 1999, the research team described the first case from temperate Australian waters. Two fatalities, both affecting overseas tourists holidaying
in north Queensland, occurred in early 2002. Both cases were attributed to intracranial haemorrhage associated with severe hypertension.
If you suspect Irukandji syndrome call for an ambulance immediately!
